Abstract: There is ample micro-level evidence establishing a relationship between health outcomes for individuals and household socio-economic status including income levels and wealth status (Wilkinson 1998; Thomas and Frankenberg 2002). However, relatively little attention has been paid to the effects of context and geography. There is tremendous variation in health outcomes across states and within states in India. In this proposal for research, we attempt to understand why health outcomes are much worse in some areas in comparison to other areas. We do this by focusing on the relationship between income and inequality within the community level and individual health.
