Abstract: It was a rainy morning in August 2016 and Ajay Bakshi, CEO of the Manipal chain of hospitals was stuck in the notorious Bangalore traffic, inching towards a quarterly board review meeting. His thoughts drifted towards the agenda of operational improvements at his hospitals. It had been almost a year since he had successfully raised private equity which valued his organization at US $600 million. Apart from launching a spate of new acquisitions to expand Manipal’s footprint, Bakshi was also concerned about improving the operational efficiency of his flagship Manipal Hospital Bangalore (MHB). The organization had just successfully implemented a common warehouse for consumables purchases for all the four hospital in its Bangalore cluster and had improved service levels from about 60% to about 98%. Bakshi’s next target was to improve the operating room efficiency in MHB, especially in its General OT complex. But given the very high variability of the various types of surgeries and in the complexity of the procedures, it seemed a very uphill task. Another option to improve operational efficiency was to have a common Central Sterile Service Department which would centralize the equipment sterilization demands of the four hospitals in the Bangalore cluster.
