Abstract: This report seeks to understand the reasons for lower participation of female labour force in India. The reasons have been segregated for rural and urban women. A state wise examination of reasons for low participation has also been done to understand if there are any state specific reasons. The study also includes measures taken by Government of India for enabling higher participation rate of females in workforce. Finally, some recommendations based on our assessment of the secondary and primary research have been provided which can help increase the percentage of women in the workforce in India thus contributing to a higher GDP
