Abstract: The paper covers the study of the current status of school education primarily in small towns and tier 3 cities. Our study focuses mainly on three kinds of institutions – Christian missionary schools, Govt. schools and other private schools. In our secondary data analysis, we found that the current education system is substandard. However, the performance of the Delhi govt. schools was found to be better than the govt. schools of other states. In the primary analysis, we found out that the missionary schools are very procedural and disciplined. Their congregation at national level plays a key role in improving the quality of learning imparted to the students. Other govt. schools are poor in shape due to several reasons such as infrastructural problems, lack of commitment from teachers and parents, dysfunctional and corrupt DEO office, imperfect RTE act, extra duties delegated to the teachers for survey etc. Also, poverty has played a significant role in parents’ unawareness and unwillingness towards the education of their children. The analysis led us to recommend schools with more autonomy. A regular parent-teacher meeting, teachers’ audit, infrastructural improvement, career counselling, skill-based learning for employability, a special class for weak students are the few highlights of our recommendation.
