Impact of open-source technology on growth of artificial intelligence

Abstract

Through this analysis we aim to test our hypothesis, that open source has contributed in the enhancement of Artificial Intelligence over the years. Our approach to test this hypothesis consists of two methods: 1. First, we have chronologically mapped various developments in Artificial Intelligence since 1950. We have not seen open source as a contributing factor in isolation but also considered other parameters like data storage capacity, processing power, data generation & capture and cloud computing. By tracking various significant developments in more than fifty years of artificial intelligence we have seen how these parameters have contributed to each of these events. We have been able to develop insights into the contributing factor of each AI milestone in the history. This has enabled us to determine contribution of Open-Source Platforms and other technologies in the development of AI. 2. Second, we have compared the various open and proprietary tools being used in the B2B and B2C markets. This has helped us understand why companies are moving to completely or partially towards making their code open source. We have analysed the differences in the offerings of proprietary and open-source tools within the same industry. Based on the comparison and the industry acceptance, we have been able to determine the outlook for the tools in consideration. Our testing of hypothesis was followed by conclusion of results and general recommendations for other tools in industry.
