Abstract: In the early days "Johnson Tiles" and other products were imported in India. The import of ceramic products including glazed tiles was banned in 1958. The Pedders, the original promoters of H & R Johnson (India) Limited, entered into a technical and financial collaboration with H&R Johnson Limited (United Kingdom) to set up a ceramic glazed tiles’ manufacturing unit in India. Under the above collaborative scheme, H & R Johnson (India) Private Limited was established in 1958. The Company was converted into a Public Limited Company in 1975. The collaboration is for a period of 50 years. Under the agreement, know-how developed in any of the factories of the H& R Johnson group is available to H&R Johnson (India) Limited. World-wide H & R Johnson organisation also offers advantage in the export of tiles from India to other countries. The collaborators are world leaders in manufacture of tiles and have their presence in all the five continents. Originally they owned 49 % of the equity which was later on reduced to 39.99 % in 1976.
