Abstract: In the fifties, immediately after independence, the government was worried over the large amount of foreign exchange being spent on imported cosmetics. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the P.M. at that time, suggested to Tata's to enter into the cosmetics industry. Thus in 1952 TOMCO promoted Lakme Ltd. as a 100% subsidiary, with the objective of manufacturing high grade perfumes, toiletries and cosmetics. Through a public issue in Dec., 1982 TOMCO reduced it's holding to 30%
