U sing modern sophisticated technology, NOCIL has been playing a viytal role in supplying chemicals to a wide spectrum of industries like pharmaceuitcal, cable, paint, textile, fibre, dyestuff, explosive, automobile, cosmetics and footwear. For the financial year 1992~93, NOCIL had a sales turnover of Rupees 644 crores on which it recorded profits of Rupees 33 crores. Its range of manufactured petrochemical products include ethylene and its numerous derivatives, propylene, isopropanol, butanol, butadiene, benzene, and PVC resins. NOCIL entered the agrochemicals sector in a big way in 1980 by setting up a plant to manufacture monocrotophos, an organophosphorous insecticide. It also produces a range of fungicides and weedicides. Another major area in which NOCIL is operating is distributorship chemicals. NOCIL is the distributor in India for a large number of Shel! Chemical products. These include general chemicals, solvents, chemical additives, fine and specialty chemicals, elastomers, plastics, and resins. NOCIL is embarking on a major expansion programme at its petrochemicals complex in Thane, Maharashtra which is expected to go onstream in 1998. The most major development regarding NOCIL in the last year has been the withdrawal of the Shell Group as an equityholder in the company. But NOCIL still holds the distributorship for Shell.
