Abstract: This project report gives the design of an expert system for project appraisal developed for the use of the Business Development & Diversification Division of Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. An expert system is a computer application software that simulates human reasoning to solve complex problems. The advantages of an expert system handling project appraisal are: i) Standardisation of evaluation procedures and benchmarks used for appraisal. 2) Reduced dependence on human expertise for project appraisal 3) Speeding up of the job of project screening and evaluation 4) Ensuring that all the important aspects of the project have been considered and stored in databases. This prevents the missing out of certain parameters from active consideration as is likely during evaluation by a human expert. The expert system design wher implemented in actuality will prove to be of immense help to KBL especially when the Kirloskar group has embarked upor an ambitious expansion plan which expects to more than treble the turnover of the group from less than Rs.1700 crores to nearly Rs .6000 crores at the turn of the decade.
