Abstract: The objective of the internship was to experience the role of a product manager while working on a project that was useful to the organization. An induction session was conducted where the heads of various business units presented the current projects their teams were working on. The project assigned to me was to transform Naukri.com to a career site. It was carried out in various stages. Firstly, a study of various job sites across the world was conducted and all career related features available on those sites were identified. Secondly, new career related features that were not yet available on any job site and modifications of some of the available features were listed down. Thirdly, a consolidated list of all the features was created and a customer survey was conducted to prioritize these features. The survey was also used as a tool to figure out what other improvements could be made to Naukri.com. Finally, the features were prioritized based on 2 major factors - value add to the job seeker and ease of implementation. Graphical representations of the end product and detailed system design were prepared for each of the features. These recommendations were finally presented to the heads of various departments like product, technology and operations. There were several key lessons learnt from the internship. • Understanding customer perception - Designing a survey for job seekers required designing the right set of questions. Each question had to be framed in such a way that it sounded interesting to the job seeker, was unambiguous and helped conclude something meaningful This task required several iterations and the results helped understand the customer better. • Online recruitment industry - The detailed study of various job sites around the world helped understand the way job sites connect job seekers and recruiters. • Role of a product manager - Ideating new features, brainstorming on their pros and cons with the team, liaising with technology, marketing and UI design teams to drive a project to completion was required as part of the project and it helped understand the role of a product manager.
