Abstract: The Church of the Virgin Mother is located in Lourdes in France. It is today visited by several million devotees of all faiths from all over the world. Lourdes is a town nestling in the foothills of the Pyrenees, the vast mountain range marking the border between France and Spain. Bernadette was born in this town on January 7, 1844, the first child of the miller, François, and his young wife, Louise. The family lived in poverty and had to suffer untold privation for a long time. On February 11, 1858, while collecting firewood with her sister and friend near the rock of Massabielle, Bernadette heard a gust of wind and noticed that a wild rosebush in a niche in the cave was moving. A gentle light brightened the dark recess and there stood a beautiful girl, dressed in white with a blue sash and a yellow rose on each foot. She was smiling, with her arms spread in welcome.
