Empowering the bottom of the pyramid from the sky: a case for satellite-based services

Abstract

India’s space programme is a classic example of scientific sophistication achieved through self-reliance. Championed over three decades by a series of visionary leaders, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is one of only six agencies world-wide that have end to end capability in space – design, development and fabrication of satellites and launch vehicles, in-orbit control and operation of satellites, and more importantly, implementing the application of space technology to address primary societal needs such as telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorological services, natural resources management, education and healthcare. Dr. Madhavan Nair, the current Chairman of ISRO, has significantly contributed to its strategic satellite launch vehicle programme, in terms of both research and leadership. Prof Shankar Venkatagiri of IIM Bangalore spoke to Dr. Nair with a view to understanding the role of space technology in addressing the needs of the vast numbers of people at the bottom of the pyramid, and the management challenges associated with this endeavour
