Abstract: The government's disinclination to engage with issues that are really holding back higher education in the country raises the suspicion that the sudden interest in creating world class universities is a form of tokenism. Indian Institute of Science, already India's best institution for science and technology, will be richer by Rs 100 crore, but the problems of the higher education sector will remain. It is up to the government to prove us wrong by taking some directed action to address the problems faced by higher education in India.
