Abstract: Post liberalization, Indian retail is seeing a major change. Pre liberalization shopping at unorganized retail stores was the way of life for Indian consumers but post liberalization, as the economy has opened up, world s best practices are coming to India and Modern retail format is also one part of those. Post liberalization, as Indian demographics are changing, per capita spending power is increasing, people are demanding more and more from their shopping experience and which is motivating the evolution in the Indian retail sector. The format of unorganized retail is a highly fragmented whereas the format of organized retail is consolidated. In case of unorganized retail, a consumer can satisfy only one or two of his/ her needs at one shop and has to visit the another shops for other needs e.g. clothing at one shop, toys at other shop etc. but in case of organized retail, a number of product categories can be found under one roof and a consumer can shop for various items at one shop, giving convenience to customers and saving their time. The first wave of change was seen by men s clothing segment in which consumers started changing their preferences to readymade clothing from ready to stitch garments. The next change came into ladies clothing segment and now the kids segments is experiencing that change. As kids needs are highly fashion conscious and changing continuously, it is becoming difficult for the unorganized sector to fulfill the evolving needs of modern day kids and that gap is giving birth to a modern organized retail in kids segment. A modern kids store can provide numerous product categories with unlimited designs/styles in clothing, toys and accessories. As an extension, modern kids stores have also started keeping clothing and accessories for expecting and new mothers.
