In August 31st 2011 Prof. Rajeev Gowda, Mr. Rakesh Godhwani and I conducted a workshop on the future of telecom – will it slow down or will it reinvent itself? The telecom sector in India had expanded largely on the back of increasing number of subscribers and reduced tariffs, i.e., large volumes and low prices. As penetration rates have expanded telcos are finding it more and more difficult to increase penetration even further through their marketing efforts and it is proving difficult to lower prices any further. The workshop looked at this issue and also on whether value added services could offer a way out.
