The Indian pharmaceutical industry is characterized by intense inter-firm competition and a high degree of heterogeneity in product quality. The former aspect is due to the lack of patent protection for pharmaceutical innovations – except for those relating to manufacturing processes – until 2005, and the existence of a thriving local generic drug industry. These are the same factors that have in recent times contributed to India’s rise as one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of generic pharmaceuticals (Chaudhuri, 2005).
