Trans-pacific partnership and its impact on India

Abstract

The study began with a generic overview of the trade scenario between India and TPP countries. To assess the real impact of TPP on India, a deep dive analysis was carried out to pinpoint the areas where India would face maximum disadvantage. Based on a step-wise logical elimination process, Textile and apparel sector was identified as the most crucial sector from India’s standpoint where Indian exports will get hurt. Real impact on lowering of tariff barriers in TPP on Indian textile and apparel sector was done using Armington elasticity approach where a scenario based calculation was done to arrive at a floor and ceiling of fluctuation in export percentages. In the next stage of the project, the textile sector would be studied in greater detail with a focus on competitiveness of the sector in not just tariff terms but also other input variables. Primary research would also be carried out to assess the on-ground situation from various perspectives like academia, industry associations and individual large and medium scale textile and apparel players in India.
