dc.description.abstractIndia’s tryst with mobile phones started on July 31, 1995, almost 20 years ago. Since then, India has come a long way. Today it is the second largest market in world in terms of number of subscribers and one of the fastest growing in the world. By the end of June 2016, 616 million1 subscribers had been added to the Indian mobile services in India. With the falling prices of smartphones, in India, 330 million unique subscribers are set to be added by 2020. The Indian mobile industry contributed to 6.5% GDP in 2015 which translates to more than INR 9 lakh crore to the economic valued added. Mobile operators and the related economy provided employment benefits also- employing around 2.2 million across the organised and unorganised sectors. In addition to this, 1.8 million jobs were indirectly supported. The number of jobs directly supported by the Indian mobile industry will be around 3 million by 2020 with around 2 million jobs to be indirectly supported.
