Today, among the giants from the Oriental world, Samsung from Korea is outperforming the world over. Sony, the Japanese giant which was at the forefront of every innovation earlier, lags miserably behind, while LG, also a Korean enterprise is trying to play catch up to Samsung. Here we try and look at what went wrong with Sony, while what is Samsung doing right. We start by looking at Sony, from the beginning, to current times. A once mighty company that suffers today, we look at what went right in the beginning and how its strategy and focus evolved. We do this by looking at all CEOs at Sony, the major events during their tenure that shaped the company’s policy, strategy and the outcomes/ consequences of such events, both short term and long term. We look at these loosely with the 5C’s framework, so as to analyse the events and the responses more lucidly, stressing more on some of the C’s more relevant to the event.
