dc.description.abstractStudying the place of women in the Indian society is not an easy thing to do, mostly because their status in the society is really ambiguous. They are the heart of the Indian society, the first thing foreigners notice when we they make their first steps in India. Indian women are everywhere, with their colorful saris, working in the streets, selling flowers or fruits. But despite this nice picture, there is today no denying, that women have not found their right place in this complex society. Figures are talking for themselves: women in India constitute 50% of the population; but only 40% of girls above 10 years old are going to school while more than 70% for boys, the alphabetization rate is 82,14% for men while 65, 46% for women.
