The main objective of this summer assignment was to study the Production Planning and Control (PPC) function at Earth Mover Division, BEML (KGF), with the intention of identifying the key issues and problems involved in the efficient functioning of the PPC department. I have tried to be exhaustive in listing down the issues and problems, Thus one can find that some of the problems mentioned have their effect typically in a short-term time frame whereas some others have a long-term impact. The methodology adopted was to study the PPC department on the basis of its structure, systems and procedures. This was followed by detailed discussions with various personnel in the Production Planning and Production Control departments. The EDP department personnel were consulted for information and discussions regarding issues of computerisation of the PPC function. The major issues identified were that of Material Accounting, coordination among the various units, inadequate transportation facilities and computerisation, which was only . in its developmental stage as yet. The recommendations addressed the issues of improving the Planning and Scheduling activities, Shop - floor level production control and computerisation
