dc.description.abstractThe late Hanumat Kali Vara Prasad (fondly known as Babuji Maharaj) said that there is no difference between Mahatmas and God. According to him, Mahatmas are realized souls and though they appear to be performing ordinary chores, they are always in in a state of natural trance experiencing spiritual bliss. The pain associated with the dualities of worldly existence can only be alleviated by a Satya Guru. Lord Rama himself travelled all over his realm in his fifteenth year to explore ways and means of overcoming wealth, ego, mind, desire, body, worry and uncertainty. On his return to Ayodhya, he requests the Sage Vasishtha to explain to him how worldly existence could be overcome and permanent bliss be established. This was how Lord Rama was initiated by the Sage Vasishtha into spiritual wisdom in the form of stories that form the essence of the Yoga Vasishtha, a text that is universally acknowledged as a masterpiece in Vedanta. In it, the sage explains to Rama that the imperishable Brahman can only be attained by sadhana or spiritual practice.
