In India the passing of the Competition Act in 2002, replacing the MRTP Act, signifies a further step towards a market economy. Issues such as the role of competition policy in a developing country, building staff and institutional capacity, relationship with regulatory bodies and the legal system have to be resolved. The Competition Commission’s role in regulating anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance and mergers and acquisitions will be critical in India’s economic growth.
