Abstract: Usually, the process of selection of personnel consists of various components and the scores obtained by each individual on these components are weighted to arrive at a composite score. Very often, these weights are determined subjectively. The individuals are ranked on the basis of this composite score and the ranked list is used to select individuals for jobs, tasks etc.. In this study, the selection process for admission of candidates for an academic institution is studied. Discriminant analysis methods are used to arrive at appropriate optimal weights to be assigned to different components of the selection process.
