As compared to the west, India seems to have skipped the internet on PC growth curve in media and information consumption (due to high cost of PC, broadband penetration, Tier-2 cities viability) and is moving directly to Mobile. More and more people are getting hooked to Mobile as their primary medium to communicate and consume media. With Mobile penetration still growing leaps and bounds, there are many mobile applications that have sprung up. From ring tones download to mobile bill payment to railway ticket booking to games to mobile ads there are a host of applications which are available in the market. Which of these applications would succeed? With the changing technology (3G) how will the marketplace react? Will Mobile applications copy Internet model (Ad based monetization) or would there be newer revenue models? Will mobile applications have its own powerful brand identity (like Yahoo! mail or Google search on internet)? Will Mobile application displace internet on PC or would it complement it? We will study Indian mobile application market and analyze the trend. Our study would capture the popular applications available currently in the market. We will develop an analysis framework to understand the success and failure of the applications. Also, we will look at the gaps in the market and opportunities for new applications. In sum, our report would be an insightful understanding of mobile applications in Indian market which will be useful for people from handset manufacturer, service providers to application developers industries
