Abstract: This project aims to study the strategy behind smartphone software platforms. Smartphones are mobile phones which have processing capability like computers and can be used to run software applications, similar to a Personal Computer or laptop. Our investigation shows that this is a market with strong network effects, and the market dynamics indicate that it will most likely be a winner-take-all or winner-take-most market. We provide a framework to analyze which software platform has the most potential to be the dominating platform in the future. Our analysis shows that Symbian and Linux are both strong candidates.
