Smartphones are mobile phones which have processing capability like computers and can be used to run software applications, similar to a Personal Computer or laptop. Our investigation shows that this is a market with strong network effects, and the market dynamics indicate that it will most likely be a winner-take-all or winner-take-most market. We provide a framework to analyze which software platform has the most potential to be the dominating platform in the future.
